Context:
What is a consequence-free space?
Consequence-free does not mean without impact – a conversation should have an effect, should create clarity. It refers to the freedom from consequences on anything outside this space – in particular, any repercussions on operational processes as well as on the personal and functional environment. Consequence-freedom comprises two dimensions: an external one and an internal one.
The external dimension
A consequence-free space makes it possible to speak as the person behind the role. What is said there has no operational repercussions, creates no reporting lines, and remains without data retention. It is a space in which the certainty exists that nothing from within it flows back into one’s own area of responsibility, let alone beyond it.
The internal dimension
The internal dimension is less familiar but equally real: every conversation erases content from long-term memory irreversibly and replaces it with new content – a property of memory that is often trivialized in everyday life but is particularly relevant for people with high decision-making responsibility. That this goes largely unnoticed is due to the brain’s efforts to conceal the process: overwriting occurs not only automatically but also entirely without awareness. Such a distortion of one’s own decision-making basis is neither trivial nor acceptable.
Neuroscience has described this process so precisely that a reconsolidation-sensitive conversation architecture could be developed. It minimizes the likelihood of such distortions and thereby establishes consequence-freedom internally as well.
Only when both dimensions are secured is a space truly consequence-free.
