What is reconsolidation‑sensitive conversation architecture?
Reconsolidation‑sensitive conversation architecture is a concept developed by Karl‑Heinz Meisters for the structural design of conversations in contexts where protecting the integrity of memory and identity is of high importance. It is based on the scientifically established mechanism of reconsolidation, which shows that activated memories are temporarily open and malleable. During this phase, questions, interpretations or offered meanings can unintentionally enter memory contents and alter them permanently, without the person being aware of the change.
This architecture prevents such unintended influence by allowing interpretation and meaning only once a memory has reconsolidated and is stable again. While a memory is open, no interpretations are offered and no structuring questions are asked. First versions remain untouched, and interpretation takes place separately in time, using new, jointly developed and congruent material that does not overwrite the original experience. The person retains full authority over their own memories, and psychological or structural interpretation occurs without entering or altering their identity.
